Blending

Overview

Explore the process of blending wine lots in Blended, detailing how to merge various lots to meet production goals or achieve desired wine characteristics.

Conducting Blending Trials

Before you decide on your final blends, use the Trial Blend function to simulate potential blends.

To use the Trial Blend function, navigate to Production. Select the Lots that you'd like to simulate and then under the Operations dropdown, choose Trial Blend.

A modal will pop up on your screen that will enable you to designate portions of the Lots that you selected for your trials. Use the tabs to flip between the Blends you've created and the print button to keep records of your results.

For each of the Trial Blends that you simulate, you will see the following information for the potential Lots:

Displaying Blend Characteristics

Blended shows key characteristics for each trial blend to ensure compliance with label requirements. It includes the overall composition such as AVA, County, State, Variety, Clone, and Vintage.

Cost Breakdown of Blends

If you have entered cost information, Blended provides a cost breakdown for each blend. This is useful for creating cost-efficient wines, especially if you are using expensive lots.

Predicting Chemistry Measurements

Blended makes predictions about important chemistry measurements of the blended wine. These include:

  • Alcohol

  • Free/molecular/total SO2

  • pH (calculates free H+ ion concentration)

  • RS (residual sugar)

  • TA (titratable acidity)

  • VA (volatile acidity)

Blending Wine Lots

After you have chosen your blends, the following instructions will show you how to blend lots.

Selecting Wine Lots

To begin selecting multiple wine lots for blending in Blended, navigate to the Production section where you will find a list of wine lots.

Each wine lot has a checkbox next to its name. Check the boxes next to the wine lots you want to blend.

At the top of the screen, you will see several dropdown menus labeled Addition, Measurement, Operation, and Other. Click the Operation dropdown menu.

From the expanded Operation dropdown, select the Blend/Combine option. This will trigger a modal window where you can enter the details of the blending operation.

Complete Combine Modal

Within the combine modal that is triggered by clicking the Blend/Combine operation option in the drop-down, you will see an Inputs section.

Here, you need to enter the amount of volume from each selected lot that you want to use for the blend. Use the dropdown menus to select lots and enter the volumes in the corresponding fields.

In the Outputs section of the modal, you can specify where you want the selected wine to go. You have the option to create a new lot with the blend or blend it into an existing lot. If creating a new lot, you will need to enter a name for the new lot. Additional options include choosing to transfer the blend to barrels and selecting only empty barrels if desired.

Once you have filled out all the required fields, you can add any notes if needed, then click the Record button to complete the blending process. If you decide not to proceed, you can click Cancel to discard the operation.
